29 May I Don’t Get It Podcast: Episode 127
Episode 127: Herpes & HIV – We’re very proud of this episode. I remember in middle school and high school sex ed we were very much instilled with fear about contracting herpes and especially, HIV. They made it seem like a death sentence, which it once was. Of course, we should take all the steps possible to prevent the spread of HIV, but today it’s considered a manageable chronic disease. The I Don’t Get It crew felt like this isn’t widespread knowledge amongst the general public. We wanted to educate our audience on the medical advancements and debunk old stereotypes and assumptions people have have the disease. We had my friend Jamie, who was diagnosed at the age of 10 with HIV in the late 80s following a tainted blood transfusion, discuss her life with HIV. She speaks about how she manages the disease with medication and how she’s told friends and boyfriends about her condition. You may be surprised by the fact her husband is at a VERY low risk of contracting the disease even though he’s not on “prep” and that women with HIV can have health, HIV-free children.
In addition to Jamie, we have an anonymous listener on the podcast to discuss her life with herpes. We chat about how it’s affected her sex life with her boyfriend, how she deals with outbreaks, and the stigma she’s experienced with friends.
